Zandvoort

Updated: Aug 24, 2023

Hello ladies and gentlemen, and welcome back to another race report! This past sunday, we raced around a track I believe some love and some hate, Zandvoort. Last season, we saw SLR Freeman take victory ahead of his former Haas teammate, ZyDRAD. Did those two make the podium again? Let’s find out!

A dominant and controlled drive saw Midzy15 take his second victory in a row, and taking the championship lead as a result. Only 9 tenths back, ZyDRAD finished 2nd for the second time around here, with Xx JamHam xX coming home in third for Williams. Crispy2001 added another solid result to his already impressive start to the season, making it two Alpha Tauri’s in the top 4 yet again. HamJam2002 rebounded from a difficult start to his season to come home in 5th, with Hoopolicious rounding out our top 6 after making a wrong strategy call. After a bizarre and quite unnecessary penalty in quali for “illegal blocking” (nice game), ABR Freeman recovered again to cross the line in P7, with his teammate gho3t C0LT behind him in 8th. Bezzas1 remained in his starting position of 9th, while SLR Darnell rounded out our points finishers. UKBeastAssassin dropped back one position from his starting position to finish 11th, with his Haas teammate I VR46 I behind in 12th. MeRkz47 jumped to 13th after post race penalties, with KevinGT9389 behind. SLR Southerner moved up to 15th after V2 x Combat received 2 post race penalties, which left the Red Bull driver in 16th. Finally, our remaining finisher for Elite was SLR Smoke68. Our non-finishers were: PaRa Quickz, raceroller22, and SLR Niki.

Be sure to tune in on the 21st for Elite in Spain! Enjoy your week off everybody and I’ll catch you all next week.

V2, deliberate crash Outcome:

15s + 3LP Reason: It is a retirement on track, therefore V2 has been awarded with the standard retirement on track penalty.

SLR Southerner vs Raceroller22

Outcome: 5s + 1LP to RaceRoller22

Reason: Raceroller22 tries a move going into turn 1, he doesn’t make the move stick and moves over to the left straight into SLR Southerner and gives him damage.

gho3t COLT vs V2 x Combat

Outcome: 5s + 1LP to V2 x Combat

Reason: V2 and gho3t COLT are going for the same bit of track and this causes gho3t to spin. Whilst V2 does spin gho3t a less severe pen is given because of the nature of the corner being quite tight and because V2 at least makes some attempt to give him room, just not enough.

Kevingt9389 vs V2 x Combat

Outcome: racing incident

Reason: V2 x Combat loses control of his car, unfortunately Kevingt9389 runs into the back of V2 and gets damage.

Midzy15 vs V2 x Combat

Outcome: no further action.

Reason: Cars around you on a qualifying lap may distract you, but the stewards do not think that V2 should be awarded with a penalty as he does not block midzy.

PaRa Quickz speeding in the pitlane.

Outcome: 10s + 2LP (added to next race due to DNF)

Reason: PaRa Quickz speeds into the pitlane during qualifying and makes no attempt to slow down. As this has the same effect as cutting the track and he hasn’t endangered anyone else, PaRa Quickz is awarded with the same penalty that goes for cutting the track in qualifying.

SLR arrived at the Zandvoort circuit in The Netherlands to mark the start of the European season and qualifying was always gonna be an intense affair with fast flowing corners and little scope for overtaking, there was a greater emphasis on quali as there was little room to be made in the race. With 4 races already gone and 3 different winners, it was looking to be a tight contest between McLaren and Mercedes, and for McLaren it would be a tale of two halves as SLR Rando would demonstrate scintillating one lap pace and take pole position with a 1:08.207, while his teammate SLR Semm made an error on the exit of T13 and put his car in the wall in Q2, without setting a time, meaning he'd have some work to do from 14th. Mercedes of SillyBunny47711 and SLR Dylan would make it a silver arrow 2-3 but 5tenths off the pace of SLR Rando. Bennett628 and Riggsey x would round out the top 5 The lights went out and it was Bennett628 from P4 who got the cleanest and fastest launch off his grid slot, but with nowhere to go, he had to settle in behind the two mercs, however, SillyBunny47711 and SLR Rando were side by side through T1 and the Mercedes ran the McLaren onto the kerb on the exit, slowing them both down, and it was Bennett628's Alfa Romeo who would lead at the end of Lap1. Bad luck would strike again for SLR Semm after making some contact at T8 early on and having to force him onto an alternative strategy, and ARL PReDaToRZz in the Ferrari, losing time at T9 and both finding themselves at the back of the pack, while CechThisOut gave us something to check out, +4positions on the start.

The VSC would come out after SLR Morgan crashed before the final corner and would slow the pack down while the track was being cleared and nurtured, and after a brief spell, we were racing once more, and SLR Rando lost out as Riggsey x got a solid exit off T11 and shot past him when we went to green, the McLaren slipping down the order once more, but eventually got back past 3laps later. In this time, Sotierclock110 would get a mega run on BrindyBoi67 and SLR Liam into T1, but Liam would hold his Alpha Tauri on the high banking of T4 and retake the place. The strategies were gonna be key to winning this race or gaining track position, but it was SLR Dylan in the Mercedes who blinked first and pitted on Lap8, going for an undercut, trying to force the hand of those ahead. The leading 3, Bennett628, SillyBunny47711 and SLR Rando would pit altogether on Lap10 while Riggsey x and CechThisOut would go and try an extremely risky overcut strategy as the pit phase was well and truly underway. SLR Dylan would get himself back in front of SLR Rando but would lose it on traction at T4 and have to settle back in behind the McLaren. The concern for the drivers would be the traffic, which would twist the fate of the race. The leading pack would find themselves behind ARL Tooman and Sotierclock110 after their stops while Riggsey x and CechThisOut was in clear air, putting in the time, with both pitting at the end of L11. A race against time and the smallest margins can mean all the difference as Riggsey x would slot perfectly into the net race lead, and CechThisOut would filter out just behind the leading train, showing the overcut, which doesn't normally work, have a big part to play in the race order.

The leading pack would be behind ARL Tooman in the Haas, who started the race on the mediums, on an alternate strategy, racing his own race, but with Zandvoort being so tight and twisty, overtaking was a big challenge, and his Haas would keep the pack bunched up for some laps to come. SillyBunny47711 and Sotierclock110 would have an incident going into T8 and would ruin both their races. Lewisod would lead whilst the pack were being held Riggsey x would get his way past ARL Tooman into T1 and Bennett628 looked to try follow the Renault driver through, but with Tooman closing the door and trying to stick his car in behind the Renault, Bennett would give Tooman a tap, and SLR Rando would drive into the back of the Alfa, losing a bit of his wing in the process. This allowed Riggsey-x to go out and build a gap in some clean air. On the same lap, SLR McKeon would pull off an emphatic double move on SLR Rando and SLR Dylan, two hotly suggested title favourites, by splitting both and sending his car down the middle of the pair of them into T12 and T13, a brilliant move executed to millimetric perfection. Up to P7 While the Renault Driver was on a mission to build out a gap and maintain his advantage, Bennett628 would finally get past ARL Tooman into T1 around the outside, but the move would see the Haas go into the side of him and spin and block Cechthisout and a driver who hasn't had much luck in his season, couldn't buy any here as he sustained wing damage from the contact, but while this was unfolding, Lewisod was on the alternate strategy, medium to hards, and came out in P3 and was in a prime position to chase down the win on much fresher tyres, the chase was on, but the Racing Point driver had a penalty overhead, so who would come out on top?

JH99 would go for an audacious move on ARL Tooman into T12 which would see them both go off track and through the gravel, but the chase for the win was on as Lewisod would ramp up the pressure on Bennett628, who was losing time to Riggsey x in front. SLR Connor would retire in the pits on lap 21 and would bring some yellows, but nothing of great concern, however while Bennett628 was losing the time, with potential that he had some minor damage? Lewisod, SLR Dylan and SLR McKeon were all closing in and eating into the gap. SLR Rando, who excelled in Qualifying, would have a mare after picking up x2 5second penalties and ruining any real chance for points. SLR Dylan would also see himself pick up some damage off camera and this would be the thorn in his side for a strong result, as SLR McKeon would quickly close in and make himself comfortable in the Mercedes' dirty air. This would be the battle to watch, as McKeon would have the grip and speed to keep relentlessly applying the pressure and Brindyboi67 would introduce himself into this battle, just as McKeon would make a move into T1 on SLR Dylan to take P4 on track. Dylan would eventually lose places to Brindyboi67 and Lil Wiggyy, who held it round the outside of T14 to make the move into the banked curve and take the place.

Whether it was methodical driving or a bit out of reach for Lewisod, he would still find himself behind Bennett628 for some laps and would only be a matter of laps for him to close the gap and jump into the Alfa's DRS. JH would also see his way past Dylan after the Mercedes ran wide at T11 and Rando fancied his chances as well but on the exit of T13, while riding on the back of the Red Bull, saw his McLaren veer off into the wall, which was very reminiscent of his teammate in Quali. Lewisod would also make his way past Bennett628 and up to P2, but with an overbearing penalty, this was enough for Riggsey x to start driving with a bit more caution after building his gap very early on his stint, but Lewisod would show rapid pace on much fresher rubber and close the gap down. It would be Riggsey x who would take the win after throwing some risk into the mix with an overcut, which was executed perfectly due to traffic for early stoppers and a fast inlap, from Bennett628, who after a strong start, led for the first stint and drove a solid race to P2 and Lewisod, who did take P2 on track, would round off the podium after his penalty demoted him to P3, it was a credible drive that did earn him some DOTD votes in chat, but it would be Riggsey x who would take back to back DOTD honours on top of his second SLR win, but with an honourable mention to his teammate Lil Wiggyy, who started from p20 and cut his way up to P4, a solid all round drive from Renault in Division 1.

Semm vs Gooner: OUTCOME - 10 Seconds and 2 License points for SLR Gooner. Semm was blocked coming into S3 on his flying lap while Gooner was on an out lap. Given semm has no line it makes this even harder to concentrate on braking points with a car right in front of him

Tooman vs Bennett: OUTCOME - 1 license point to Bennett. This is a reduced Quali Block penalty because Bennett does get out the way however we feel it is super late and disrupts toomans line coming into S2. Not worthy of a penalty however 1 license point as a warning to never react that late to someone on a lap again.

Tooman vs JH: OUTCOME - 10 Seconds and 1 license point to JH. Coming into S3 JH outbrakes himself causing to push tooman into the gravel. No damage caused to Tooman however we have given a more severe pen because tooman loses multiple positions and JH seems to make the move out of desperation.

Clock vs Bunny No. 1: OUTCOME - No Further Action. We don't see an intentional brake check given the circumstances.

Clock vs Bunny No. 2: OUTCOME - Racing incident. Given the evidence we have. We have decided that both drivers are partially at fault and both drivers could have done something to prevent this from happening. We believe bunny is not completely along side of clock to go for such an unorthodox move around the outside, however clock could have given more space to bunny and clock had Red arrows on his OSD so he was aware of bunny's positioning.

Dylan vs Lil Wiggyy: OUTCOME - 5 seconds and 1 license point to Lil Wiggyy. Coming into the penultimate corner wiggyy goes for a move around the outside and turns in incredibly early squeezing Dylan and causing him to lose time. Given that Dylan didnt get damage we believe it's only worthy of 5 seconds

Liam vs Semm: OUTCOME - 10 Seconds and 1 license point. Just before the fast right in S1 semm seems to come across and swipe into Liam sending him into a wall and loses Liam 3 positions. Semm is very lucky to have no retired Liam. Liam miraculously doesn't get damage but we still believe this to be 10 seconds as it was very dangerous and cost Liam a massive amount of time.

In a very chaotic weekend all over SLR, of course Division Two attempted to abide by its mantle of the most hectic Division, even if it wasn’t even of the night (cough cough Div 3)

Pole was taken by rockamad73 for the second time this season, and the Renault driver continues to be statistically the best qualifying performer in the division this season. Funnily enough the second and third best qualifiers came P2 and P3, with championship leader SLR FemPest taking the front row over OwenHowell36 fresh off of his first SLR podium.

Out went the lights and P2 and P3 swapped positions out of turn 1, whilst most over positions stayed the same until the safety car was brought out mid way through the first lap. It looked to be similar again to last week with the same front 3 pulling a gap, until a virtual safety car really changed things up. SPhh crashed into the pit entry to bring it out, and some decided to box. On the restart at an awkward part of the track 4 drivers got drive through penalties; including the top 2 drivers! SLR FemPest was then able to take a comfortable lead, with craigfk in P2. Those two would then continue in that fashion until the chequered flag, with SLR Barlow taking P3. However the podium was then shuffled after the stewards meeting as craigfk was awarded a 10 second penalty for spinning SLR Teddy on lap 17. That would only relegate the second place man down one position, and he would stay P3. All other penalties would be awarded to non finishers, meaning that we have 3 qualifying bans for Spain, subject to appeals on Wednesday night.

What a hectic weekend, and it’s fair to say everyone has deserved a nice week off, before we get the engines firing again in just under 2 weeks for Spain. Have fun and enjoy!

SLR Panther vs SLR b33n

Outcome: 15s + 3LP to SLR b33n (qualifying ban)

Reason: SLR b33n attempts to rejoin, but isn’t aware of drivers around him, colliding with panther.

SLR Teddy vs craigfk

Outcome: 10s + 2LP

Reason: Craig turns in, giving teddy zero room and spinning him, however due to how tight this corner is and how difficult it is to leave other cars room without going off track, some leniency is given.

OwenHowell36 vs SLR Scopezz

Outcome: no further action.

Reason: Scopezz and Owen make slight contact whilst racing wheel to wheel. Owen comes off worse but Scopezz isn’t at fault for this because Owen doesn’t turn in early enough, initiating the contact.

Zachisbeast25 vs SLR Scopezz

Outcome: Racing incident

Reason: It’s lap 1 and the cars are bunched up together with zachisbeast very close behind Scopezz. It’s very common that drivers are breaking earlier than in their qualifying laps. Therefore the stewards find it a racing incident.

OG James 96 (GR63) vs SLR Hicklin

Outcome: no further action

Reason: There is insufficient evidence for the stewards to give a penalty here. From this view we cannot tell why hicklin careers into OG as he has already lost the car before they make contact.

darkxenon vs SLR icallum

Outcome: 15s + 3LP to SLR icallum

Reason: SLR icallum leaves absolutely no room to darkxenon, which spins darkxenon round and onto the gravel, and therefore SLR icallum is awarded with a 15-second time penalty.

darkxenon vs SLR Hicklin

Outcome: 10s + 2LP

Reason: SLR Hicklin blocks darkxenon on his hotlap, therefore he is awarded with a 10-second qualifying block penalty.

rockamad73- retire on track

Outcome: 15s + 3LP (qualifying ban)

Reason: rockamad73 has deliberately retired on track, which is not allowed, rockamad73 knows that as well. Therefore rockamad73 is awarded with a 15-second time penalty.

OwenHowell36 vs SLR Teddy

Outcome: no further action

Reason: SLR Teddy gets out of the way of OwenHowell36. It’s in an unconventional way, but this is by no means a quali block

Onto race 5 and it was Lofty4794 in the Haas that took pole position with SLR Hyperz in the Renault joining him on the front row. It was SLR Dolph1n in the Alpha Tauri in P3 and SLR Dodgy in the Alfa Romeo making up the second row for the start of the race. The race start was full of drama as everyone rounded T1 and headed for T2 & T3 there was a multiple car incident which seen SLR J3st3r in the Renault facing the wrong way as the Safety Car was deployed lap 1. This then caused 11 drivers to receive 5 second penalties for collisions under the safety car in an awful start to the race. Lap 2 during safety car conditions then had SLR St20h in the Alpha Tauri collide with Aflyinglemon318 in the Racing Point ending the race for SLR St20h in the barrier after T4. Lap 4 saw the restart as Lofty4794 lead the field with SLR Hyperz and SLR Dodgy following. A spin on lap 5 for Lofy4794 allowed SLR Hyperz to take the lead with Baggiefan1995 in the Ferrari up into P2. Lap 7 and SLR Dodgy managed to take P2 from Baggiefan1995 at T1 as SLR Hyperz has extended his lead to over 2 seconds at the front. By lap 8 Lofty4794 was up into P3 and then took P2 the following lap making the move on SLR Dodgy at T1. Lap 11 then seen a crash for Scot85laney in the Red Bull as he tried to make a move on SLR Spr1tley in the Racing Point at T3 and ended up in the wall ending his race bringing a VSC. Lap 12 then brought the start of the standard pit window as Baggiefan1995 made a move onto the hards while his teammate SLR Russell was in the gravel at T7 after spinning out.

Lap 13 then saw race leader SLR Hyperz make a pitstop as Lofty4794 stayed out to take P1 as SLR Dodgy in P3 also came in for his pitstop onto hards. It was lap 15 before race leader Lofty4794 pitted with a 9 second lead with Honeybadger56x in the Mercedes chasing him down in P2. SLR Dodgy then made a move into P6 past Baggiefan1995 at T1 on lap 20 after a 3-car battle for 4 laps including SLR Gareth in P5. Lap 22 then brought race leader Honeybadger56x in for his stop as Aflyinglemon318 crashed out bringing another safety car as Lofty4749 regained the race lead. Another pitstop for Lofty4794 on lap 23 then pushed SLR Hyperz into P1 but Honeybadger56X was now in P2 with fresh softs. The safety car restart was then lap 26 as Honeybadger56x claimed P1 as he passed SLR Hyperz at T1 as Lofty4794 got out of shape and SLR Dodgy went up into P3. Lap 27 and UK Demonz in the Haas who had made his way up to P5 was then overtaken by Baggiefan1995 as he split the 2 Haas drivers. The start of lap 28 then saw Lofty4794 rear end SLR Dodgy at T1 ending any chance of SLR Dodgy getting a point’s finish as Lofty4794 also picked up front wing damage in the process. UK Demonz then ended up moving his way up into P3 as the final 6 laps remained. With little change in the final few laps it was Honeybadger56X that brought it home in P1 with SLR Hyperz in P2 and UK Demonz making up the final podium spot in P3. SLR Doplh1n was P4, SLR Gareth in P5, SLR Stevooo P6, SLR Colden P7, SLR J3st3r P8, Lofty4794 P9 and Baggiefan1995 was in P10.

| 21 | Maxwell vs SLR J3st3r Lap 1

OUTCOME: No further action

REASON: J3st3r does not have control of his car due to making contact with multiple cars. J3st3r couldn't do anything here.

GrumpyOrange976 vs x J GEDDES x and SLR J3ster Lap 5

OUTCOME: 20s 4LP x J GEDDES x

REASON: Dangerous driving. GEDDES starts reversing onto the track while cars behind are approaching. This leads onto multiple incidents.

SLR Russell Lap 6

OUTCOME: 10s 2LP

REASON: Russel spins on the apex of T1 but proceeds to reset to track to get going again. Resetting to track is not permitted.

SLR Gareth Lap 22

OUTCOME: 5s 1LP

REASON: Gareth makes a very late decision to not pit but crosses the white section of the track that is not allowed. Although no advantage was gained or harm to any other driver it is the drivers duty to be aware of the pit lane guidelines. The guidelines are posted in the Discord before the races.

SLR c0w3n vs | 21 | Maxwell Lap 26

OUTCOME: No further action

REASON: Maxwell is spinning due to an incident ahead. c0w3n is just unfortunate in this situation.

SLR Dodgy vs Lofty Lap 29

OUTCOME: 15s 3LP Lofty

REASON: Lofty misses his breaking point at T1 running into the back of Dodgy. This spins Dodgy then unfortunately catches out other drivers running close behind.
