We approach the final stretch of SLR Formula 2 season where we end with four back to back races starting with COTA for round 10! The Evo Class championship has already been settled with SLR Dodgy retaining his crown however we still had the big championships on hand to dish out. How will we look after this round?
One Shot Quali! Crispy2001 once again takes pole position for the twelve time in his F2 career edging ever closer to ZyDRADS pole record of seventeen. SLR Corey would take second only just by the smallest of margins from title contender SLR Darnell who is joined by season three champion SLR Ham on row two. Back in eighth SLR Dodgy was your best Evo qualifier.
The Sprint! On reverse grid pole you had MasonGammon followed by reigning champion Raceroller and SLR Dodgy. Away we went in the challenging wet conditions where Raceroller immediately took the lead going into turn one. SLR Darnell had already made up three places at the start and Para Quickz on his F2 debut found himself into the top three. Only took til the second lap to endure some big drama as Crispy would be involved in a crash having nowhere to go from the spinning Monkey. Luckily escaping without damage but was sent towards the back of the pack. Mid race Para was quickest on track closing on leader Raceroller with Darnell behind seemingly in a lonely third. The track begins to dry and lap seven we start to see drivers pit for the slicks. MasonGammon was the first to gamble which paid off massively however pitting a lap later proved very costly for SLR Southerner and Crispy who both got delayed behind their teammates in the pits. J Lee Menz and SLR Ham opted to try and finish the race on the wet tyres which didn’t pay off at all both dropping like a stone in the final few laps. In those final two laps it was a battle for first between Raceroller, Para Quickz and SLR Darnell which was eventually won by Raceroller followed by a debut podium for Para Quickz and SLR Corey in third also scoring his first F2 podium. Darnell would fall to fourth through pens but still managed to finish ahead of MasonGammon, Division, Evo Sprint winner SLR Dodgy and SLR Southerner who took the rest of the points.
The Feature! For this race in the dry conditions we saw the race start with all but six drivers start on the medium tyres. Away we went unless you were Para who stalled on the line. Further into the lap Southerners round got from bad to worse after being sent into a spin following contact by SLR Ham resulting in the ART driver trying to recover from the back of the grid. Chungas was your biggest mover in lap one making up eight places. Three laps in the front four of Crispy, Darnell, Corey and Monkey began to pull away from the rest of the pack. Three laps later Monkey would begin to fall back but further behind in fifth MasonGammon and SLR Ham would put on a show swapping positions with Ham coming out on top. Lap nine things are heating up for the lead between championship rivals Crispy and Darnell who would trade places on multiple occasions. SLR Darnell with some desperate overtaking moves knowing how key this was for his title hopes. Two laps later off camera the HWA driver would actually spin and lose a whole chunk of time however was saved by the safety car. Safety car is in and we have two laps of racing! It was Crispy vs Darnell for the win and despite more desperate efforts by Darnell it was Crispy who always had the answers to take another Formula 2 feature win. Darnell had to settle for second with Raceroller in third. Monkey would just miss out on the podium with fourth but was still able to beat SLR Corey. OwenHowell would impress in sixth with Chungas and MasonGammon close behind. PrimusGaming would score his first ever F2 points in ninth with SLR Southerner ending a miserable round in tenth. In eleventh on his F2 return SLR James was your feature Evo Class winner.
With the absence of UKBeastAssassin and the alleged absence of Raceroller for next week its looking like it could well be a two horse race for the title between Crispy and Darnell. If the feature race has anything to go by the final few rounds between the two could well be fireworks! We return next week where we head to Brazil!
