SLR meets Wreckfest in Saudi Arabia

Updated: Oct 27, 2023

McKeon

The show goes on.

Round 2 of the SLR McKeon season. A great first race last time out with a lot of action everywhere, but now we are at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, the fastest street circuit on the calendar, it’s a track some dread but many love, the action is always everywhere so this race will for sure be a good one.

Qualifying was close…. For 3 minutes with SLR Corey took his first pole position of the season! After his first run it was clear to all involved he had this in the bag and was clearly prepared and took pole by a considerable margin. P2 in the end was NRX Finn, who showed some promise in Bahrain but had an unfortunate race but this could be a good opportunity for him a first podium could definitely be on the cards here for the McLaren driver. Rounding off the top 3 was SemmF1 who always in a season has this glimmer of pace from out of nowhere, let’s hope he can get another podium, or will his evening be spent in a wall once again? Other notable performances would be SLR Medal2533 who after qualifying P15 last round and now, being P4 is a huge jump, and let’s hope he can keep this going.

The race was one full of action, many battles all around the field, and with a safety car to spice things up, in the end it was SLR Corey who would take his first win of the season. After being in the lead for many laps he made a tough choice work by taking out his opposition in SLR Medal2533 (Bastard by the way fuck you Corey:D) to take the victory in a very convincing style. In P2 in the end it was NRX Finn, who was able to keep with the top 2 with the battling, and after the collision between Corey and Medal was able to take P2 and hold on behind to take his first podium in SLR, a great drive from him. Rounding off the top 3 was raceroller22 who had a fairly quiet but good drive from the Mercedes driver always battling with Crispy and Finn but only just getting beaten by the McLaren driver in the end is a good result and one I’m sure he’ll be hoping to continue going forward.

An entertaining race with a controversial moment and winner does make it interesting how the championship standings will look going forward. Australia is next up, a very different track one with little overtaking opportunities and one where track limits are a struggle but overall a great track and one that should bring some great action so until then hope everyone has a great week!

Incident 1 - Evoke vs Merkz - Qualifying - Impeding

Outcome: Qualifying Ban to Merkz to be served in his next race.

Incident 2 - SLR Medal vs SLR Corey - Lap 20 - Causing A Collision

Outcome: 5s Time Penalty + 2LPs to SLR Corey

Reason: We have given this penalty as there was some connection issue in play (slight desync due to lobby host being disconnected) but also did cause a car to spin and get minor wing damage.

Division 2

When last week’s report mentioned the idea of Division 2 at Jeddah being “complete and utter chaos”, that was to be proven true come the race but first, we head to qualifying.

Qualifying

In typical Ferrari fashion, something was due to happen and that something was championship leader FRL Kirito sticking it into the wall at turn 4! A shame for the Puerto Rican as he would have to start from a lowly 14th on the grid. But towards the top was last week’s 2nd fastest qualifier, SLR Liamm who would take pole by a 2 tenths gap to UKBeastAssassin who was eager to make a return to the top step following his penalty in Bahrain. A gap of 0.004 separated the McLaren of dRaSt1k bLazE and SLR Bennett for 3rd and 4th respectively. 2 and a half tenths from OwenHowell in 5th covered all the way down to Lenbau in 15th, showing how strong the midfield can be! A big shout-out goes to Division 3 champion BigBag92 for placing it 6th on the grid.

The Race

As the lights went out, the top of order stayed pretty much the same until Bennett who had lost 2 placed at the start. Other big gainers include ZachIsBeast going from 18th to 13th, and Kirito who was out of position making up 5 to go 9th. The driver who suffered the most misfortune off the line was VapidCoot who fell to the back of the grid. Towards the end of lap one, Blaze on the soft managed to get into P1 after being in P3 prior to the final straight, a quality piece of racecraft.

The first safety was brought out on lap as Lenbau, after his Bahrain performance of retiring on lap 1, did one better and retired on lap 2 unfortunately for him. Not the start to the opening 2 races he would have wanted.

Lap 4 onto Lap 5 is when we got going again as Blaze led the field into turn 1, but behind was where LSW L3G3ND44 and SLR Southerner had separate incidents, pushing them down the order.

Blaze’s pace on the soft kept him in the lead all the way until the second safety car period (lap 10), this time the game opting for a virtual safety car. This time, caused by the Ferrari of Legend who had dropped it on the exit of the S section. Blaze somehow had managed to gain around 2 seconds in Beast before pitting from the lead on the softs., presumably a game of the deltas being interesting.

The game gave us a lap of racing before bringing out Bernd Mayländer for a second time, this time for the qualifying hero of BigBag turning his efforts into zero points, crashing at the final corner of the lap, a painful one for the Red Bull who was running so very well at this moment in time.

The top 4 had gone past the pit lane so positionally, Kirito was the first driver on track to pit under the safety car. A majority of the field opted to pit onto the mediums except for Kislesko who chose the hards. You must not forget Blaze, who had pit the lap before, but was fortunate enough to keep the lead. Kirito was chasing Scar B0rga hard to the line, but another case of the deltas prevented the duo being higher up than 5th and 4th.

Episode 2 of Blaze leading under the safety car as we went under way ended and we went racing again before the most… interesting of incidents happened…

After overtaking Bennett into the hairpin, Kirito went into AI and managed to take of a wing and some of Bennet’s car as they went tumbling into each other and the wall, shoving the Alfa Romeo out of pretty much anything.

Lap 15 ended Blaze’s run at the front of the pack as he was overtaken by the Haas of Owen, running very well indeed. Vapid’s race went from bad to worse as him and F1ABQWERTYYY collided on lap 16.

As DJ Khaled once said, “another one”, and by that, a safety car. A terrible day for Alpine much like real life as of late had seen Adrian VIII into the wall and out. Kirito (wing damage after the incident with Bennett), Scar, SLR Mash, QWERTY, Vapid and Bennett all decided to come in for the soft tyre to close out the race.

For once, Blaze wasn’t leading under safety car Owen, on 2 lap fresher and softer tyres was staring at the back of the Aston Martin safety car.

After this latest stoppage, the race resumed at lap 20 for about 25 seconds as QWERTY had crashed at turn 3.

HOW MANY SAFETY CARS DO WE WANT!!!

A 3 lap sprint was to conclude this race, with the order remaining mostly the same and then, there was another crash but we were all saved of the misery of a safety because we were to far into the race.. thank God, honestly.

The two who came together you ask? The server’s best friends, Scar and Kirito. The Mercedes and Ferrari drivers colliding on lap 24 and used this moment to give any future interactions a spicy injection of hatred and cringe worthy arguments.

Final lap and the gap was 8 tenths from Owen in the lead to Blaze, and another 9 back to Liam.

But even with how good DRS is, it wasn’t enough for Blaze to overcome Owen, who took the chequered flag to win the Wreckfest Safety Car Grand Prix! A first for Owen since Russia in Season 8 to get the first of potentially many wins for the strong Haas duo, in which Beast compliments my point as he came home 4th. Blaze came home second and Liam 3rd. ChicknRosery who definitely went under the radar finished 5th. Kislesko in the Aston Martin took 6 while TIR Haze finished an impressive 7th from the back of the grid, as did her back row companion for this race, GoldenEggFryer who finished in 8th. ZachIsBeast and SLR Southerner rounded out the tail end of the points, taking 9th and 10th respectively.

Phew, that’s now done with but SLR Division 2 isn’t, as we go down under and head to Albert Park in what will be a DRS haven for the drivers with the new DRS zone. Be sure to check the SLR twitch channel and 8pm for more Division 2 action.

Incident involving Scar B0rga and FRL Kirito - Lap 24, Turn 5:

Qualifying Ban and 3 License Points to Scar B0rga for causing terminal damage.

Scar loses control of the car and goes into Kirito who has left more than enough room for the Mercedes. The contact gives Kirito terminal damage hence the penalty.

Incident involving SLR Bennett and FRL Kirito - Lap 15, Turn 14:

Qualifying Ban and 2 License Points (due to DNF) to FRL Kirito for dangerous driving resulting in significant damage to SLR Bennett.

Kirito goes into ai with Bennett right behind him which results in Bennett being hit into the wall receiving yellow/orange wing damage.

Drivers are reminded to use ai only when it is safe to do so and absolutely necessary.

Incident involving SLR Southerner and F1ABQW3RTYYY - Lap 4 Safety Car Restart:

2 License Points (due to DNF) to F1ABQW3RTYYY for spinning another car.

The penalty for this incident is appropriate for the situation as drivers were changing speed dramatically before contact was made. However QW3RTY smashes into Southerner spinning him and is still seen to be largely at fault for the incident.

Incident involving SLR Southerner and SLR Marsh - Lap 5, Turn 16:

5 Second Penalty and 1 License Point to SLR Marsh for spinning another car.

Going into turn 16 Marsh out-brakes himself, running into the back of Southerner and spinning him in the process.

Incident involving VapidCoot74 and SLR Marsh - Lap 1, Turn 1:

3 Second Penalty and 1 License Point to SLR Marsh for causing a collision.

Marsh our brakes himself into turn 1 causing Vapid to half spin and lose multiple poisonous. Due to it being lap one and not a full spin a 3 second penalty has been applied here.

Incident involving VapidCoot74 and F1ABQW3RTYYY - Lap 16, Turn 2:

2 License Points (due to DNF) to F1ABQW3RTYYY for spinning another car.

Vapid goes for a slightly unorthodox line through turn one which sees him set up for a good run out of turn 2. QW3RTY sticks his nose in to a gap that’s never really there and always closing spinning Vapid in the process.

l 21 l Maxwell vs SLR Hicklin Causing Major Damage - Lap 22

Outcome: NFA

We think that Maxwell here, cuts to the left to try and overtake the cars ahead battling but forgets about Hicklin being on his inside through the corner and in moving left, causes the collision and it is an unfortunate one but one we feel he causes.

SLR Barlow vs SLR Allen Unsafe Rejoin and 5 second penalty removal request- Lap 22

Outcome: 5 seconds removed for SLR Barlow and 3 second penalty +1 LP to SLR Allen

We think that Allen makes the mistake of going over the sausage kerb and has to re-join the track a corner later but doesn’t seem to care about anyone behind and makes Barlow have to take avoiding action not to hit Allen. We think Allen should have entered the track much more safely but since this did not cause an incident we feel the penalty given is correct.
