New-Look Catalunya

Updated: Oct 27, 2023

Round 6 of the SLR McKeon championship is at Catalunya, Spain. A track with much history, tough to overtake many fast and technical areas of the track, very hard on tyres, so is always a track that can bring out a good race, so let’s see how these guys deal with the track. After Monaco, two drivers are tied at the top, Snypz SB and SLR Corey. Both have been so impressive so far this season, so let’s see if these two can have a battle today, and let’s see who’s leading the drivers after today.

Qualifying was a typical dry session meaning all drivers had to be on the limit finding all the time they could, but after all 18 minutes of the action, it would be SLR Corey to take another pole position this season! Still impressive that Corey is just able to find the pace to always get pole, definitely one of the quickest guys right now and is in a prime position to gain back his lead in the Driver’s Championship. Second position in the end was SimbarocksONE. A driver who usually struggles in qualifying will be happy about this place, certainly a good spot for him to try and get him a podium something he is certainly good enough to do. Rounding off the top 3 in qualifying was ELiTE x RisKz. Always up there when he attends the races, a good result for him but I’m sure he would have hoped for the top 2 but definitely has the pace to go and win this thing so let’s see how he does.

The race was a dry one, meaning this race was going to be all about getting the strategy right and making the right overtakes at the right time, but after the 33 laps of action, it would ELiTE x RisKz to take the race win! Another impressive race from the Aston Martin Driver was always in the train for the lead of the race and kept his cool even when Corey undercut him to just gain the time lost back, and was able to stay ahead all the way until the end. Elite is definitely a driver to keep an eye on now because he could for sure be close to the championship should he be able to make most of the races left to go. Second place in the end was SLR Corey. Another podium for this guy, he’s certainly beginning to find this rhythm and self belief in himself, really quick wherever we go, is a joy to watch and with all the battling today I’m sure he is gutted that he couldn’t win but this result takes him to the top of the driver's championship so surely he can’t be too down about this one. Rounding off the top 3 would be SimbarocksONE. The first podium for the Alpine driver this season, is always in and around podiums at many tracks and finally finds himself in the right spot at the right time, he’ll be looking to continue this form and see where he could get to in the standings. Other notable drives in the field were SLR Jam40 who from starting P15 to grab P8 in the end at one of the harder tracks to keep positions, is very good going for the Aston Martin driver, always consistently good in the races, and continues this trend getting valuable points to his tally.

An entertaining race for all, with a few incidents but a new championship leader in the form of SLR Corey certainly helps his case but puts pressure on the other driver so it will be fascinating to watch how this championship evolves as we head past the first quarter of the season. Next up is the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. One of the most demanding tracks on the calendar, as a short lap but with track limits being a constant issue, you need to concentrate on the track at all times, and one moment, missing one apex could make or break your race. But until then I hope everyone has a great week!

SLR Ham vs SLR Corey - Lap 30 - Collision resulting in wing damage

Outcome: NFA

Reason: Whilst contact has been made here we feel like ham has plenty of room to move into without being so close to Corey. We understand that he has taken the racing line into the corner but with Corey being squeezed by Ham it was only ever going to end in contact between the two.

Raceroller vs AERT Arbon - Lap 20 - Causing a collision resulting in minor wing damage

Outcome: 5s Time Penalty + 1LP to AERT Arbon

Reason: Moving over late to the racing line and then braking sharply causing roller to hit him and causing damage

Toby Griffiths vs Zydrad - Qualifiying - Causing a collision resulting in major wing damage

Outcome: Qualifying Ban to Zydrad + 2LPs

Reason: Clear as day Zydrad just chilling on the racing line around turn 3 and not moving resulting in Toby going into the back of him and getting major wing damage

SLR Jam vs. TMS SORA - Lap 11 - Unsporting Behaviour

Outcome: 3s Time Penalty + 1LP to TMS Sora

Reason: TMS Sora defends late on the straight forcing Jam to lift and then making a 2nd defensive move back over to the racing line

Toby Griffiths vs. PRT Adrian - Lap 1 - Causing a collision resulting in Major Damage

Outcome: 10s Time Penalty + 2LPs to PRT Adrian

Reason: Adrian should see sense especially on lap 1, Car ahead so can’t overtake Griffiths & still leaves his nose in, which then makes contact and causes a crash giving significant damage

Snypz SB vs Raceroller - Lap 1 - Dangerous driving

Outcome: Warning to Raceroller

Reason: Roller made a move to the right to make a move on Semm and in doing so has cut off Snypz. But as he didnt cause any damage or lose any position we feel a warning to be more aware is sufficient

Snypz SB vs Crowding - Lap 1 - Dangerous driving

Outcome: 2LP to Crowding

Reason: Crowding pulls out with Snypz right next to him and hits him. Once again no damage however snypz does lose places because of this unnecessary move from Crowding.

Division 2

¡Vamos a España bebito! Following on from last night's F2 action, it was the turn of the most chaotic division in SLR, Division 2. Would Blaze be able to keep his Verstappen-esque form like I predicted last week?

Qualifying

After the first half of the session, it was championship leader Blaze who topped the timing sheets and come the end of qualifying would stay there, almost 2 tenths clear of second place OwenHowell in the HAAS. Rounding out the top 3 would be the Williams of F1ABQW3RTYYY.

The Race

As we get to the grid from the loading screen… It's raining! (Even though we knew from qualifying) Yowie Wowie!! The conditions were not enough for the extreme tyre so everyone opted for the green wall of the intermediate.

And as we went to 5 red lights, Blaze held his nerve into turn 1 despite the excellent start from the driver who started 3rd, QWERTY who had managed to jump Owen off the line. The biggest losers from the first lap were ChicknRosery, who had an incident and fell to the back, SLR Allen also being caught up in something, and GoldenEggFryer who just naturally lost positions potentially just wanting to survive. SotierClock and THATGUY, we’re the biggest you could argue being forced to pit due to damage. Big gainers include SLR Southerner (13th to 10th), ZachIsBeast (18th to 13th) and Kislesko (20th to 15th).

The first major collision of the race came at lap 3, with Vapid and Owen battling. Going into turn 5 the Alpine went deep, and Owen saw the chance to switch back and simply go past but no! Kirito comes steaming into a gap that was never going to come and causes a collision which definitely pleased those behind, mainly Scar B0rga as he was able to capitalize and make the 2 free positions on offer. Vapid going deep was somehow the best decision out of all of it.

The first retiree of the race would come in the form of an AlphaTauri, ChicknRosery who would now have picked up a 4th pit lane retirement in the 5 races he's attended.

The first to see red in the world of black and white would be Zach, achieving the first track limits penalty of the race.

Lap 13 would bring the unluckiness of the number towards Kislesko, with the Aston Martin finding the barrier at turn 12 and crashing out of the race, therefore bringing out the first safety car period. This was a chance for many to come off their worn intermediates and get onto a fresh set with the dry weather coming to ne a factor soon. Kirito - who had pitted earlier to do this wet stint on two sets of tyres, came back to where he was before the incident with Owen, P5 with the running order being; Blaze, QWERTY, Vapid, Beast, Kirito, Owen, Scar, Haze (who had queerly worked he way up the field from 14th), Southernet and Mash who had opted for the medium tyre at this moment in time, but would ditch it a few laps later to then let Legend go into the top 10.

Blaze would begin the crawl up to the top of the hill only to go back down to begin the start of lap 17 and the start of the race again as Vapid would become a man possessed, aggressively battling Kirito and then overtaking Beast for 3rd place in the space of a sector.

Lap 23 saw the end of the rain but still the water on the track keeping some on the inters. About half the field opt to come in for the slick tyres to do a 10 lap stint to the end of the race. The last driver to stay on the wet tyres was Scar, who benefitted massively on not getting caught out by going a lap too late with the vsc brought out by THATGUY causing debris on track.

But it all wouldn’t matter as everyone would come together like a swarm of fireflies as a lap 27 safety car car us a sprint towards the end.

Lap 30 would be the restart lap, giving us 4 to work with. Blaze and QWERTY would break from Vapid in 3rd to give a shootout for the win between these 2.

QWERTY would gain the use of DRS for the final 2 laps, so could have some choice as to when to make the move. In the background Haze would make a big move to go into 4th on the final lap.

But in the end it would be Blaze taking another win in this division after the showdown with QWERTY towards the end. Vapid would come home to take an impressive 3rd given his recent performances. Haze would claim 4th with a stellar drive from 14th on the grid, with the HAAS drivers of Beast and Owen claiming 5th and 6th. Scar would take 7th with Clock, Kirito and Adrian (🐐) taking home the final set of points.

Stick around to next Friday in the 8pm slot as we head to the city of Montreal, Canada to tackle track limit central aka the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve!

Owen Vs Kirito - 5s and 1 LP to Kirito for spinning another car.

Kirito comes from a long way back and there is never a move on. The contact that is made causes Owen to spin and so a 5s penalty has been awarded.

Southerner potential pen removal - 3s time penalty removed.

1 warning has come as a result of a game glitch so the penalty has been removed.

EchoAA23 vs M Mcloughlin x - Spinning another driver - Lap 13

Outcome: NFA

Here we think the two drivers go side by side in a corner that is notorious for being tricky for giving space, and Echo is slightly behind at the apex and should know the risks, Mcloughlin gave as much racing room as he could but Echo still unfortunately spun as a result.
