Land Down Under - Round 3: Australia

Updated: Oct 27, 2023

McKeon

Round 3 of the SLR McKeon championship is at Albert Park, Australia. A track with many challenges, Track limits a constant struggle, side by side racing is very dangerous if no one is willing to back out, Albert Park always brings out great races, and I’m sure this one will be no different. Been many races so far that have had their moments so let’s see what this one has in store.

Quali was an interesting one this week with the title at the top being so close and with many drivers being able to take it, could be one of intrigue. In the end, it was SLR Ham19 who would take his second pole position of the season! He really is showing he has some great pace this game with the two poles being at very different tracks, he must be wondering whether he can fight for the championship this season and I sure hope so with all the competition in the division. Second place was SLR Corey with another 2nd place this season showing impressive qualifying and I’m sure he’ll be hoping that he can get at Ham at the start and go for another win and hopefully in less controversial ways (still mad at you Corey :D). Rounding off the top 3 was TMS SORA, who had his first reserve appearance of the season, has always had a good pace and is in a good starting position to go and fight the top two and get a good result here.

The race was one of intrigue with a few out of position and many starting higher than usual it made it a race where the action was everywhere, and impossible to keep up but after all the safety cars and collisions it was Snypz SB who would take his first win of the season! A driver who has always been in and around the top 5 of the races so far this season, finally shows a great turn of speed to find the edge and be able to take the race win, and one he’ll be hoping to continue for our continuing Championship Leader. Second place was SLR Jam40 who after a pretty bad qualifying for him, gains many positions and fights his way up to P2 being only 0.082 away from the win, I’m sure he’s slightly gutted but is a good result nonetheless, after transitioning to no line I’m sure this will be a boost to his confidence that he can be quick with No Line. Rounding off the top 3 was BMidzy who after getting up to the top 3 during the race, fought hard with Snypz to try and get the win but getting track limit penalties made it hard for them to retain, but regardless both showed great pace and will be a better feeling after a lacklustre Race last time out. Notable drives would be ZyDRAD, who after qualifying P15 gained 7 positions and got many points with P7. This driver this season just has this tendency to do well in the race and it is so impressive with many points his experience shines and has done so well this season.

After a good race for most, it was some race for most as Snypz winning helped him take a bigger lead in the championship and with him looking very consistent it will be interesting to see how he can do going forward. Next up will be Portimao, a track we haven’t gone to much in SLR but one that is always a race that is tricky with many tough corners, but until then I hope everyone has a great week!

Incident 1

SLR Jam vs SimbarocksONE - Lap 8 - Causing A Collision

Outcome: 5s Time Penalty + 1LP to SimbarocksONE

Reason: We believe Simba is at fault for the collision as he wasn't aware of his surroundings even though the move wasn't on for jam he stayed on the outside next to the wall and Simba drifts across to the outside catching his rear tyre onto jams front tyre and both ended up getting damage.

Incident 2

SLR Evvo vs Multiple Cars

Outcome: 10s Time Penalty + 2LPs to SLR Evvo

Reason: Unnecessary for Evvo to make a move when he did and causes another car to spin and also 2 cars to get damage in the process

Incident 3

SparksYT15 - Lap 24 - Unsporting Behaviour

Outcome: 15s Time Penalty + 3LPs to SparksYT15

Reason: using all his battery just to catch up to evvo and then sending a massive divebomb then pushing him off track in what only could be as revenge from an earlier incident is something we do not expect or ever want to see again especially from someone from the top tier in SLR.

Division 2

Welcome to Division 2’s attempt at driving around Albert Park really quickly and there’s no better place to start than qualifying.

Qualifying

Championship hopeful FRL Kirito and washed driver Scar B0rga were to take no part in qualifying, serving bans picked up last week in the shambles that was Jeddah. With one front runner out of contention, dRaSt1k bLaZe was the driver to take pole, a whole 0.166 clear of SLR Liamm. Championship leader OwenHowell36 took 3rd with debutants Ski Fee and SLR Allen sandwiching SLR Bennett who started 5th.

The Race

The 5 red lights go out and we are women and men at work down under as the race starts and there’s already a car out by turn 1… Don’t be Lenbau, don’t be Lenbau… Instead, it was Owen who was out! Now, I’ve got no clue on what exactly happened as the video missed the start, but what I can confirm is that heartbreak struck for the HAAS driver. Give it about 10 corners later and the second crash occurred, the Red Bull of SLR Allen crashing just before the penultimate corner. Ski Fee after his unreal quali fell to the back needing a wing change from damage.

The next spin came from LSW Legend who had pirouetted his way round the final corner and made sure that Ferrari would need a miracle in order to get even into the points.

Lap 6 provided an overtake or two so good, it allowed an already drunk Diesel in the comms box to enjoy a shot of what I’ll presume was alcohol again. Through the new DRS zone, Scar managed to pull out the slingshot of dreams through GoldenEggFryer and Kislesko and gets them both going into the fast chicane to elevate himself from 20th to 9th.

Lap 14 and GEF pulled off a stellar overtake, emulating the Mercedes minus a car from lap 6, to get ahead of Kirito for 9th place and would start a charge onto Scar but Liamm from the pit lane would interrupt and give another good battle.

And then JMC ran out of talent going into lap 15 braking way too hard into the hairpin battling TIR Haze.

Lap 16 brought out a VSC and was a blessing for THATGUY who had stayed out on his mediums, as did Haze and Scar but were further back and couldn’t gain the full benefit. THATGUY following the pitstop took the lead ahead of Blaze, and would give Blaze something to aim for going into the final stages

Kislesko became the 4th car retired on lap 18 following his crash at the chicane!

Scar once again went for 2 cars across the massive drs zone that is the middle sector, poetically passing his two biggest fans in Kirito and JMC.

Kirito’s day went from bad to worse, having contact during a battle with QWERTY and GEF and ending in the car park that is the first sector.

Into the final few laps and a battle for 7th emerged after Bennett - who had a comfortable gap to Scar and GEF - picked up wing damage and had been overtaken both by the Mercedes and the Williams within the space of a lap.

The charge from Blaze up front wasn’t enough as even with the penalty from track limits, ThatGuy was able to take a well taken victory albeit with an aid from the vsc but that should take nothing from the job that he’s had to do. Blaze came home to take second which is still a massive amount of points considering what his title rivals managed. Haze overtook Liam via penalties to round out the podiums, another stellar job by the lead Mercedes driver.

So, after this jumble up of a race down under, we head to the Algarve region of Portugal, to head to the rollercoaster of a ride that is the Portimão track. We’ll be back live in that usual slot of 8pm on Friday to see if we can have a 4th winner in 4 races.

Incident involving UKBeastAssassin and drast1k blaze - Qualifying:

Warning to drast1k blaze.

As Beast has invalidated his lap he loses nothing from this potential block. However blaze will not have been aware of this and had beast been on a valid lap it would’ve been effected. Therefore we feel a warning to blaze which will serve as a reminder of qualifying etiquette is the best penalty to give here.

Incident involving OwenHowell36 and SLR Liamm - Lap 1, Turn 1:

No further action.

Liam covers Owen off on the run into turn 1 and is actually fully ahead until Owen deploys his battery and attempts to force his way to Liam’s outside, it’s an unfortunate lap 1 incident but not one which we feel Liam can be blamed for as he was covering the racing lane and a substantial amount ahead of Owen to justify moving over. The subsequent spin and crash of Owen’s despite being as a result of this, again cannot be blamed on Liam and is again just an unfortunate outcome of Owen going for a speculative move on the first lap taking to the grass as a result.

Track Limits Penalty Appeal - SLR Liamm:

1 x 3 second penalty to be removed.

From the evidence received we concluded that 1 x 3 second penalty can be removed due to the accumulation of warnings received unfairly or due to game issues.

Incident involving FRL Kirito, F1ABQW3RTY and SLR Fryer - Lap 20 Turns 3/4:

5 Second Penalty and 1 License Point to F1ABQW3RTY for causing a collision as the result of a divebomb. No further action for the turn 4 incident.

QW3RTY outbrakes himself going for the move on Kirito going into turn 3. However no damage is caused and Kirito is only pushed wide and is never fully off track. The turn 4 incident is a case of 3 into 1 doesn’t go, QW3RTY finds himself on the outside of the corner leaving space for Kirito who is slow out of Turn 3 due to the aforementioned incident and having to straddle the track/kerb/grass on the outside of Turn 3. Fryer goes for a gap which we all believe was there and that the vast majority of drivers would go for, Kirito attempts to hold it on the inside which he’s entitled to do and it’s just an unfortunate coming together which we feel the blame cannot be apportioned to any one driver specifically.

Incident involving drast1k blaze and Kislesko - Qualifying:

2 License Points to Kislesko for impeding blaze through the final 2 corners.

Blaze does improve on his lap and therefore we feel as though this is a more appropriate penalty than a qualifying ban as there is evidence to suggest that while blaze was clearly impeded, he wasn’t blocked or forced to back out of the lap which would’ve resulted in a harsher penalty.

SLR Hicklin vs SLR Barlow - Causing Major Damage- Lap 11

Outcome: NFA

We think that the collision due to the nature of the corner, was inevitable with both cars going side by side so even though it is unfortunate, we don’t feel there’s any blame on either driver.

HuskySaturn1943 vs Mellow. - Spinning another driver- Lap 11

Outcome: 3 seconds and 1LP to Mellow.

We think that here Mellow turns in far too aggressively with the car on his inside and collides with the other driver, so we think Mellow is to blame for this one.

BadOtterTV vs legendarydannyd - Spinning another driver - Lap 1

Outcome: NFA

We think here BadOtter tries the switchback but due to it being the first lap, everyone is very close and it would be difficult for Danny to not hit him so, we think this is no one’s fault.

BadOtterTV vs Starsorphan6 - Pit Lane incident- Lap 7

Outcome: NFA

Even though it does look like he went fairly slow don’t think much happens here and no penalty here.

F1 Warhead vs richie chappell - Spinning another driver- Lap 19

Outcome: 5 second and 2LP to richie chappell

Here we feel that even though Warhead breaks slightly early, Chappell is just carrying too much speed and doesn’t realise how fast the Haas ahead is going and spins him

EchoAA23 vs SLR Barlow - Spinning another driver and causing major damage- Lap 5

Outcome: 10 seconds +3LP to SLR Barlow

Here we think that Barlow just underestimates how much more speed he has and mistimes moving across and instead spins Echo and as a result, he gains some heavy damage. We think the incident is just a little reckless and easily avoidable and think the penalty is justified.

EchoAA23 vs SLR Dodgy - Pushing a driver off track- Lap 14

Outcome: NFA

We think here it is tricky to give loads of space and we think Dodgy made a considerable effort to avoid contact and through the corner, he is ahead.

EchoAA23 vs BadOtterTV - Causing a collision- Lap 23

Outcome: NFA

We think here there is nothing to it with Otter being ahead at the apex with newer tyres here Echo should back out here.
