Home sweet home! Round six takes us to the home of Formula 1, Formula 2 and Summit League Racing. We are at Silverstone! A favourite to many and one track a lot will want to their name to have won at. Who would achieve this this round?
One shot Quali! Crispy2001 would achieve F2 pole position once again with a brilliant lap to beat teammate SLR Darnell for another UNI Virtuosi front row lockout to set the theme of the round already of what to expect. MasonGammon05 would brilliantly qualify third for his best Formula 2 grid start. Joining him on row two was SLR Cech in fourth. Championship Leader Raceroller would have to settle for fifth and further down in ninth the highest Evo class qualifier would once again be SLR Dodgy.
The Feature! It took us only a few corners into the race to endure some early drama where both OwenHowell and SLR Bennett would lose their rears and spin on the entry onto the wellington straight. J Lee Menz would have a tough start to the round with an early drive through penalty following a VSC infringement. Looking further down SLR Niki on his return after a long ban was making his way up the grid following a qualifying issue with connection but back at the front MasonGammon was continuing to raise eyebrows with fantastic race pace putting a challenge to Cech who was defending third. Cech would do this right up to the entrance of the pit lane where unfortunately the reserve driver would get a pit lane speeding penalty following contact from behind by the Hitech of SLR Vandoorne. After the pitstop phase we saw some moves. Raceroller would jump both Gammon and Cech with the undercut but it seemed the overcut would also work. Darnell would jump his teammate into the lead and Charouz driver UKBeastAssassin would make up three places to position himself into a net podium position. Darnell would find immense late race pace to create a gap to Crispy with a hope to build a lead bigger than three seconds to nullify his track exceeding penalty. It wasn’t enough though as Crispy would take the win to lead a UNI one - two from Darnell. Beast would take third just beating Raceroller to the final podium spot. SLR Southerner would finish fifth gaining from drivers ahead getting time penalties. Gammon would finish six for a great result ahead of SLR Niki and SillyBunny on their F2 return. To round out the points was Cech and Van Doorne. SLR Dodgy would just miss out on official points in eleventh but took the feature Evo class win.
The Sprint! SillyBunny would start on reserve grid pole for a heavy rain sprint race ahead of SLR Niki. Behind on row two was MasonGammon and SLR Southerner. Away we went and in a rare occurrence we had a jump start…..in fact we had three! A rare mistake from Southerner jumping the lights also made Beast and Menz react to the ART driver to which all three were warranted with a drive through penalty. With a pit lane like Silverstone it was affectively their races over. Into turns one, two and three it was chaos as the wet track was catching a lot of drivers out. One being Van Doorne who ended up facing the wrong way after huge contact with Darnell with the UNI driver lucky to escape any damage. Niki was your net leader with both UNI Virtuosi cars just behind in second and third. Reigning champion FRA Ham had a fantastic start making up twelve places in the first couple of laps to climb into sixth to which he would later on endure a great battle with brother and previous title contender FRA Jam. Lap five the top three had already pulled out a gap to SillyBunny in fourth. Podium places seemed secure but in which order? Further down in seventh we had a great battle ongoing between Cech and NonRipeLoki for seventh which soon turned into a threesome when SLR Dodgy joined the party. Lap seven Crispy makes contact with the back of Nikis rear that would put both drivers off balance. Darnell would take advantage and take second off Crispy. A few laps later Darnell would catch and make the move on Niki to take the race lead. Niki would fail to respond and. even fall to third following a mistake on the final lap. Darnell got redemption and brilliantly won the sprint to this time lead the UNI one - two ahead of Crispy creating history on the way where for the first time ever a F2 constructors team achieved the highest possible points scored in a single F2 round. Niki despite leading most of the race had to settle for third. SillyBunny scored fourth to complete a successful return to Formula 2 just beating Jam, Dodgy and Ham on the way. Loki would round off the points scoring positions but unfortunately missed out on the Evo sprint win to Dodgy. Raceroller would finish outside the points which lost his status as championship leader to Crispy.
A change of championship leader, returning faces scoring great points and Britain showing just how different the weather can be in such a short time is what we got to see for round six of the Formula 2 season. Absolute dominance by UNI Virtuosi also to massively strengthen their lead in the quest for the constructors title. We see you next week at Hungary where last season we never got the chance to race in the dry. Many will be hoping the rain will stay away for when lights go out once more!
