We arrived to the Circuit De Barcelona Catalunya in Spain for Round 6 of the SLR F2 season. Conditions for qualifying were extremely unique. A full wet track but on dry tyres. But that didn’t change up the order, with BRT Griffiths claiming a 3rd pole of the season and reining champion SLR Corey alongside on the front toe. Blown who appears to only race for Spain put his car 3rd on the grid for the feature race.
The sprint race saw our EVO championship leader, SLR Marsh on reverse grid pole, potentially looking to add to his podium tally this season. A great start for Mash meant he would hold onto the lead with some great pace from the Van Amersfoort driver. But a mix of strategies throughout the field with some drivers opting to go for the softs hoping they’d hold on. SLR Corey was one of those drivers on the soft tyres flying his way through from starting 9th and would close in and overtake leader SLR Mash with another of the soft runners BRT Griffiths also closing in, who would also later pass Mash. Two other drivers who were making great progress was OwenHowell36 who also started on the softs was in the top 10, Coupe a Benz also opted for this strategy and saw his DAMS into the points. Corey and Griffiths would put on a great show for the lead but BRT Griffiths and Campos would come out on top in the sprint with the Rodin Carlin of Corey finishing runner up, still hunting for a first victory of the season. SLR Mash got close to the ageing tyres of Corey but was still able to hold onto for 3rd collecting a 4th podium of the season. Coupe a Benz would come home 6th making the soft tyres work and with that collecting his first points of the season. OwenHowell36 would finish 7th after starting 19th makimg the most of his softs and some more points to his tally.
The feature race saw a difference in strategy from the top 2, with Griffiths on the Hards and Corey on the softs. Corey would pounce immediately taking the lead on the opening lap trying to pull as big of as gap he can. SLR Darnell who also started on the soft tyres was making great progress in the opening laps, closing his way in on the top 3 with ease. Corey would see himself into the pits after a solid stint on the softs but would it be enough to hold off Griffiths? Well after Griffiths pitting the safety car made an appearance seeing many cars peel into the pit lane for fresh softs but race leader now BRT Griffiths would stay out for track position. The race would get back underway with a handful of laps to go with drivers getting elbows out at the restart. OwenHowell36 who was on for one of his greatest weekends in SLR F2 would tumble down the order after spinning out and taking a few cars with him. Griffiths would complete yet another double, by winning the feature race after holding off the cars behind him. SLR Southerner would be back on the podium after finishing P2 with SLR Corey rounding out the podium. A great drive from the other Darnell brother of SLR Darnell going from 17th up to 5th with a mega drive around one of his most successful tracks. Another great race for the evo drivers with Coupe a Benz picking up more points after finishing 7th. SLR Jack would pick up his first points of the season finishing 8th and finally HuskySaturn in the Trident would take the final championship point and getting his first ever SLR F2 points.
BRT Griffiths extends the championship lead to 34 points to SLR Medal, SLR Southerner would shoot up to 3rd in the championship order after a great weekend. A tough season for the Carlin pair so far but they would see themselves now ahead of ART in the Constructors championship now up to 5th. Next time round we head to the home of motor racing, Silverstone. A track which always produces great racing and some iconic moments of SLR F2.

Blogs driver of the round: Coupe a Benz – Benz who was still hunting for his first points of the season coming into this round had his sights set on them this weekend. Qualifying 11th for the DAMS team and a gamble starting on the softs in the sprint crossed the line in 6th after a mega drive. The feature he stayed composed after the safety car restart and managed to pick up 7th place picking up 9 points in total. Hopefully for Benz its the start of a great run of form.
