Here we are at Abu Dhabi for the last race of the season! Round 15 and still we have two drivers titles to be decided and secured. Looking in prime position for those titles are Raceroller22 who only needed a handful of points and for the Evo title SLR Dodgy only needed two points or for J Lee Menz not to get best Evo qualifier.
One Shot Quali! The top five in the championship would be the top five in qualifying for the last race of the season. SLR Darnell would get a crucial pole to keep his very slim hopes alive by just beating teammate Crispy who was now mathematically out of a chance for the F2 title. UKBeastAssassin was third just ahead of Championship leader Raceroller who were all separated by less than a tenth! SLR Southerner in fifth would be a further four tenths back. For the Evo Class it was SLR Marsh who would get highest placed Evo driver! J Lee Menz invalidated his lap time halfway through his lap which confirmed and secured SLR Dodgy as the inaugural Evo Class Champion! Many congratulations to him! Still we had one more title to decide and thats the big one.
The Feature! We saw drama after only a couple of corners where Crispy lost the rear going round turn two to hit the barriers heavy and retire from the session. Once resumed from the VSC Dodgy soon spun round turn three and also retired from the impact but thankfully his title was already secured. As the laps started counting the front guys started to stretch their gap whilst further back SLR Jam and Midzy would have moments of battling which didn’t last too long as both separately as it seemed made mistakes at the same time round turn three. Jam would crash and retire however Midzy would live to fight again. The drama didn’t stop there as another crash this time from F2 debutant SLR Rosery would bring out the safety car! This was defining as we saw some drivers most notably at the front opting not to pit which proved to be very costly for their races. Those drivers being Darnell, Beast, Southerner, Bennett and Marsh. Once resumed Raceroller who made the stop didn’t find it as easy as first thought perhaps to take the place on SLR Marsh but did get the job done eventually and did the same once again a lap or two later on Marsh’s MP Motorsport teammate SLR Bennett. With two laps to go all the stops had been made and all the drivers who didn’t pit during the safety car as mentioned earlier did indeed prove costly all being so far away from their original positions before the safety car. Couple of laps later we cross the finish line! Stand up Scotland you have a new World Champion! Raceroller takes the title in style by winning the feature race! Division would finish second despite starting all the way back in nineteenth and Midzy would have a great recovery drive into third. J Lee Menz would finish in an impressive fourth and also take the Evo Feature win just ahead of SLR Darnell and BigBag92 who impressively scored points on his SLR F2 debut. UKBeastAssassin, Southerner, Bennett and MasonGammon would take the remaining points scoring positions.
The Sprint! Southerner starts on reverse grid pole sharing the front row with Charouz driver UKBeastAssassin who were kept company with BigBag and Darnell on the row behind. Away we go again and it goes from bad to worse for SLR Jam who didn’t even make it to turn one! Multiple drivers involved but this is not how Jam wanted to bow out of Formula 2. On the VSC restart Darnell would react quicker than UKBeast and in doing so jumped into p2. We now had a Darnell one two who would have a little scrap in sector two some laps later for the lead in which Southerner was able to maintain and keep hold of. This would be halted as SLR Rosery would once again bring out the safety car which we saw again drivers pitting for the softer tyre for a late charge through the pack. With two laps of racing left we were back underway where the nerves were too much for the ART of Southerner who lost the rear going through turn three and was out of contention for the win but not out of the race. The battle for the win was now between Darnell and UKBeast. We saw no change at the front as Darnell would take the last win of the season with Beast having to settle for second and J Lee Menz once again on the podium for another brilliant performance which closed off an unbelievable season for the Campos driver. He would also take the Evo sprint win in doing so. Division showed his best so far at Abu Dhabi with another great finish in fourth ahead of OwenHowell36 who achieved his best ever SLR F2 finish! Your season 4 champion Raceroller would finish his season in sixth just ahead of SLR Bennett and once again provisionally in the points BigBag who survived very late pressure from the recovering SLR Southerner.
That is that! Season four is done! Raceroller your Season 4 Formula 2 Champion, UNI Virtuosi your constructors champions and SLR Dodgy as Evo Class Champion. What a memorable season it has been. We only have to wait three weeks til we go all over again where season 5 begins at Bahrain to start a new Formula 2 season which looks and sounds very exciting. We go into season 5 with four different champions in four seasons…..will we crown a fifth champion or will we crown our first two time F2 champion? See you next season!
