McKeon

Round 8 of the shortened season marked the halfway point of the Mckeon division season.

Firstly qualifying, which is typically the closest of the season here at Austria. Any small mistake would be crucial.

Each of the sessions had different weather. Q1 was dry, q2 was a downpour and q3 had light rain. The tricky conditions caught out crispy yet again. The haas driver crashed in q2 and lined up 14th. Championship leader bmidzy handled these tricky conditions the best, claiming yet another pole position. V2 continued a good streak of results with p2 and PaRa was p3. Shout-out to merkz and riggsey, who both made q3, the former for the first time this season.

Onto the race, where every driver had a free tyre choice due to the rain in q2. The top 10 were fairly evenly split between softs and mediums. The soft runners of midzy15, para and ZyDRAD assumed the early high positions but v2 was keeping a watching brief in p4 on mediums, as were raceroller and crowding.

As the race went on, the medium runners got quicker and quicker relative to the soft runners until a lap 14 safety car! This was the perfect lap for the soft runners to pit, which they did, and left the medium runners with a difficult choice. The 3 top medium runners all opted for different strategies here. Crowding went onto a set of softs, hoping to stretch them to the end or to take advantage of another SC. V2 went for another set of mediums, also hoping for another SC. Raceroller boxed twice under the SC. Once for the softs to satisfy the regulations and once again for the mediums to go to the end. This dropped him right down the order, but the mclaren driver had good pace and would be looking to get back up the field.

The laps after the SC were frenetic and all came to blows. PaRa, v2 and crowding would be involved in an incident. The beneficiaries of this were ZyDRAD and crispy! Crispy had recovered excellently and was sitting in a very healthy p2, albeit with a time penalty to his name.

This incident also meant that bmidzy15 was able to break DRS. He controlled the gap and would eventually claim the victory. Behind there was a very intense battle for the other podium positions. Williams driver SLR Corey was also involved in this battle and without a penalty. Para and ZyDRAD were also without pens so it was realistically a 3 way fight for p2 and p3. This would become a 2 way fight when Corey lost it with 1 lap to go! He would recover from this and finish p6, but he definitely could have got more. A very impressive return to form for Corey nonetheless. Entering the final lap PaRa was in p2 and zy in p3, but at Austria the DRS is very powerful. Aided by DRS and a minor equipment issue for para, zy would make the move to get an excellent p2! Para was frustrated but it was still p3 for him. Behind them crispy would lose it at the final corner! This would cost him a few positions, ending up p7. Meanwhile v2 got disqualified for not pitting again and only using mediums. Shoutout also to Riggsey and KevinGT for scoring their first points of the season! This means that every full time driver has scored in Mckeon this season.

The race is Silverstone and with a gap of 58 points at the top, will anyone be able to claw back at bmidsy15’s advantage at a home race for many of SLR’s drivers.

Division 1

Round 8 of the Division 1 season saw the drivers head to the Red Bull Ring for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Championship leader SLR Cech had missed the last round in France along with both Red Bull drivers which presented a perfect opportunity for Simba and Elite to gain ground in the championship. Heading into this weekend the McLaren driver held a 16 point lead over the Swede with Simba a further 7 behind.

The form of FRA Adzzz was also not to be looked at lightly as the Alpine driver headed into round 8 off the back of back to back victories at Azerbaijan and France, laying down his claim for the drivers title in some fashion.

As we headed into qualifying weather was on everyone's minds given the track record of some fairly heavy showers in the Styria region but alas the forecast, while somewhat grey and cloudy, offered no rain and relief for the majority of the field I imagine.

In the early stages of Q1 SLR Ham19 was the first driver to dip into the 1:03s as the the lap times progressed throughout the session a further 8 drivers would make it into the 1:03s including impressive mediums tyre lap times from championship hopefuls Jito and Elite.

The 5 drivers eliminated in Q1 were: DPT Moneybag, SLR Vandoorne, ZachisBeast25, J Lee Menz and SLR Barlow who found himself at the back of the grid despite being only .523 off of the fastest time in the session set by Leviking just showing how close the field spread was!

Elite topped the timings in Q2 as he set a blistering 1:03.500 putting him almost 2 tenths clear of Jito in P2! FRA Adzzz opted to start on the mediums as he finished P7, Adzzz was joined on the mediums by Simba who snook through with a 1:04.078, a lap which wouldn't have put him in the top 10 in Q1! Simba's fortune was perhaps down to the likes of Jam and Paul who couldn't better the earlier runs on the mediums showing just how easy it is to invalidate while pushing the limits at the Red Bull Ring!

SLR Quattro would be the first driver to receive the liberty of a free tyre choice as he lined up P11, alongside him was the returning UKBeastAssassin making his return to division 1 in the Ferrari, Jam was 13th with Paul 15th and the Mercedes of ShutMedal split them to line up 14th.

Into Q3 then and the early bet for pole surely would've been Elite at this point. The Ferrari driver set the early pace to put himself P1 with Adzzz slotting into second and Jito third.

As the session progressed the Ferrari driver set improvement after improvement to claim pole position with a blistering 1:03.380, he was joined on the front row by Jito.

Adzzz and Simba lined up 3rd and 4th to make it an all mediums second row. Leviking was the fastest of the reserve drivers as he put his Williams 5th and Jensen lined up 6th. Championship leader Cech was 7th and Tooman joined him on the fourth row. Arbon and Ham rounded out the top 10, the latter failing to set a valid lap despite having pace to be as high as 4th.

As the five red lights went out for the Austrian Grand Prix Elite got away well holding the lead comfrotbaly into T1. There was some jostling for position behind the Ferrari driver with Adzzz and Jito going side by side into T1, Simba tried to capitalise on this and make a move on the Alpine driver but settled into fourth as Adzzz held firm.

further behind Jam had made up two places to get up to P11 despite starting on the mediums.

Only two drivers outside of the top 10 opted for softs, Quattro and ShutMedal, the former losing out to Jam at the start.

Ham also made a couple of positions on the first lap, getting past Arbon at T4 and then Tooman at the penultimate corner as the Alfa Romeo made a mistake and ran wide. This caused a slight concertina behind which saw contact made between Jam and Arbon with the latter spinning at the final corner.

As the drivers settled in to a rhythm following the opening lap's antics the softs runners that made up what was now the top 9 began to pull a gap from Beast and Jam who now found themselves in P10 and P11 respectively.

A screen freeze for ARL Tooman at the start of lap 5 was the catalyst for this as the Alfa Romeo driver, who was in P9 fell down the order splitting the top 8 spearheaded by Jito, who had taken the lead from Elite from the chasing pack of medium runners lead by Beast.

Barlow made a nice start from P20 getting up to 16th by the end of lap 6, the top 15 were all relatively close together still as two trains began to form after only half a dozen laps.

DPT Paul had a spin at the penultimate corner at the end of lap 7 that saw him spin into the pitlane. The Williams crew decided to retire the car and we had our first DNF of the Grand Prix. Menz swiftly followed leaving just 18 runners in the race.

Jensen spun at T1 at the start of lap 8 as the front back continued to lose members, the battling continued at the front with 7 drivers all within a few seconds of another.

The mediums tyres began to give an advantage around lap 11 as the softs started to wear. Adzzz and Simba used this to their advantage to move from P2 to P1 and P4 to P3 as the pulled off identical moves at T3.

Cech was the first of the front pack to pit as the McLaren team pulled the pin after only 12 laps, looking to use the powerful undercut to their advantage.

Lap 13 saw disaster strike for race leader FRA Adzzz as he took too much inside curb at turn 6 spinning the car into the gravel and falling down the order!

Jito, Leviking and Ham all decided to cover off Cech and pit at the end of the lap. Leviking almost had a huge crash in the pit entry getting onto the grass and almost losing control of the car, this gave Ham an opportunity for a cheeky move in the pit entry as he squeezed past the Williams and got the car slowed down in time to take a net P5.

Cech pulled off an enormous undercut to give himself a 2.5 second advantage.

Elite stayed out long hoping to have the tyre advantage at the end as Simba, now the highest running mediums runner took the lead of the race.

there was a good battle going on for P5 with ShutMedal, Moneybag and Zach all battling for what was net P11.

Ham pushed hard to try and catch Cech, getting past Jito on lap 16 and deploying all of his battery in a bid to catch the McLaren driver, alas he was unable to and had to reassess his options as Elite began to climb through the early pitters.

Barlow and Vandoorne fell victim to Austria's curbs with multiple spins, the Haas driver called it day around the half way stage despite what was such a promising start. Simba lapped Vandoorne in the other Aston Martin at the end of Lap 16 as the Silverstone based team retired his car.

By lap 20 Elite had gotten his way back past Leviking and Jito to move behind Ham for net P3. Moenybag, Jam and Beast pitted at the end of lap 20 for softs as they looked to use the advantage of the fresh rubber to challenge for points.

Quattro spun in S2 on lap 21 and again at the start of lap 22 which derailed his race massively as Adzzz pitted for softs.

Zach pitted along with Simba at the end of lap 22, Cech took the lead from Elite but Ham was having none of it and moved up to P2 in a bid to catch Cech, the Ferrari however battled back to retake second at turn 4.

Simba began to hunt down the front 5, the Aston Martin driver later admitted that he pitted a lap or two late albeit this may not have made too much of a difference to his result.

Moneybag and Jam continued to trade places as the Alfa Romeo driver moved up to P8 on lap 24.

Ham retook second on lap 26 which was at the time net P1 as Cech picked up a time penalty, the Alpine driver finally got into DRS range on lap 27 as the battle for the lead became a 5 way battle.

Jam moved up to 7th following a move on ShutMedal, Moneybag and Adzzz also followed the Haas driver through as he went from 7th to 10th in a matter of corner.

It went from bad to worse for the Mercedes driver as Beast also made a move into the penultimate corner to get up into 10th.

Ham went for a move for the lead on lap 28 but misjudged his braking to give Cech a nudge through turn 3. In doing so the Alpine driver was caught napping by Elite who went round the outside of both Ham and Cech to take the lead at turn 4.

Ham and Jito both got past Cech on lap 29 but continued battling though turns 5 and 6 which ultimately put the Alpine out of DRS range to Elite. Jito then took P2 on lap 30 as Quattro called it a day in the pitlane.

In the battle for 12th Jensen made a move on Zach at turn 3 on lap 32. Zach came back at the Mercedes at P4 attempting a switchback move but was just unable to hold it round the outside at turn 5.

Jito continued to hunt down Elite until he eventually got DRS on lap 33. He continued to sit behidn the Ferrari for a couple of laps having a little look at turn 3 on lap 35 before pouncing on the final lap on the run up to T3. Elite had a look into turn 4 but was unable to challenge the Red Bull driver who held on to the chequered flag and win the Austrian Grand Prix!

Elite came home in second with Ham thrid, making up 7 places and earning driver of the day in the process. Simba came home 4th on the alternate strategy with Cech 5th and Leviking 6th.

Moneybag was 7th again pulling off the alternate strategy to great effect to gain 9 places. Adzzz was 8th after his earlier spin. Jam came home 9th with Beast in 10th rounding out the points.

ShutMedal was the first non-points finisher in 11th with Arbon coming home 12th after his lap 1 incident. Jensen and Zach were 13th and 14th with Tooman rounding out the finishers in 15th, picking up the fastest lap late on. Quattro, Vandoorne, Barlow, Menz and Paul all retired in the pits as we had no on track DNFs!

As a result of his win Jito now sits only one point behind Cech in the championship with 93 points to the McLaren drivers 93.

As we head to SLR's home race at Silverstone are we beginning to see a two horse race for the championship or is anyone else going to force their way into the conversation?

Div 2

Welcome to Round 8 and the hills of Austria. Will we see utter dominance from the Alfa Romeo drivers after controlling last weeks race from start to finish.

Qualifying started off with a splattering of rain but very quickly dried out for a predominately dry session. Ellis37 was able to push his car the hardest and secured himself pole position with a fantastic 1:03.731. Following on from his race win last time out VapidCoot74 joined Ellis37 on the front row.

As with Qualifying the rain was coming down for the start of the race so all drivers started on the intermediates. With the red lights out we were underway and Ellis37 got away best retaining the lead through turn one. The full field made it through turn one without any contact.

Lap 1 turned out to be a very civilised and cautious lap from the entire field as they adjusted to the wet conditions. This set the trend for the first dozen laps or so. Seems everyone was just riding the rain out, which stops on lap 8! However the track was still incredibly wet.

Ellis37 still leads with both Alfa Romeo drivers hunting him down in P2 and P3. On the other side it has been a nightmare start for the McLaren drivers who bring up the rear. Both drivers had early spins which has left them chasing the pack.

In the pack there has been a few position changes but nobody has made huge gains in the wet conditions. The change over to a dry compound seems to be getting closer and closer.

The DRS is enabled on lap 16 which sparks the pit lane into a complete frenzy. During the frenzy it seems Ellis37 has some lag/desync issues which unfortunately completely destroys the race of his teammate and the McLaren’s, even though you’d argue it couldn’t get worse for them.

Because of these lag/desync for Ellis37 he had to retire from the race before it potentially got worse. He was in the lead at this point so we thank him for being so selfless and retiring as asked.

This promoted VapidCoot74 into the lead of the race with Simon37M taking second and BadOtterTV third. Instantly Simon37M and BadOtterTV went to battle and kept using the DRS to alternate positions.

The battle allows I VR46 I to get involved and within a lap overtakes the pair of them, so taking P2. But he only holds second for half a lap before spinning going into the third sector.

Lap 27, 9 laps to go. All but 6 drivers have acquired in game time penalties. Could this play a huge part in the final standings especially if there happens to be a late safety car. BadOtterTV and Simon37M continue their battle over second place. All their squabbling has allowed VapidCoot74 to build up a 6 second plus lead.

Lap 29 and what a dreadful couple laps this has turned into for Alpine. Lap 28 OwenHowell36 spun and collided with the pit wall from 6th place. Losing his wing and ended up at the very back.

Then lap 29 Simon37M losses control on the penultimate corner! This results in him dropping from P2 to P7.

So in yet another twist this left BadOtterTV with a 3 second gap to the man in 3rd place, I VR46 I. VR however had both Adrian VIII and ARL PReDaToRZz right behind. So the thrilling battle for second may have ended but another has appeared for the final podium spot.

Lap 34 and Adrian VIII manages to put himself into P3, the question is can he hold on for his first SLR podium. Things then get even sweeter for Adrian as the very next lap he overtakes BadOtter for P2.

And as the chequered flag drops it is of course VapidCoot74 who crosses the line first to take back to back wins! Adrian VIII holds on to cross in second and BadOtterTV crosses in third but due to time penalties drops to 5th. This promotes I VR46 I into third place.

Join us next week as we head to Silverstone where we will see if VapidCoot74 can make it a hat trick of races wins.

Ellis lagging - NFA

As Ellis retired in the pits (as instructed by the commentators) the appropriate action was taken and so there is no more to add.

NOTE: if a driver is lagging then it is down to the commentary team to ask them to leave the session. The stewards have no authority over incidents of this nature.

Division 3

In division 3 this week we were greeted by rain to start off Q1 towards the end of session it did start to dry up and the intermediate tyres were quicker and that saw the order constantly changing with the track getting quicker.

A dry Q2 though and SLR Charlie, SLR Jack and reserve driver RRT justhaze made it through to Q3 and would start the race on medium compound of tyre.

Q3 would see those drivers again at the top of the time sheets SLR Jack taking pole from haze. SLR Leah was 3rd alongside SLR Charlie.

To the race then and it was all dry and a clean getaway from the front two. The newly named fat ted came diving up the inside that sent him and Charlie in a bit of a spin. A massive pile up on lap 2 and 3 drivers went out and we had our first safety car of the race.

On the restart SLR scopezzz made a move on haze into turn 3 that also compromised her exit and SLR Leah and dRaSt1k bLaZe gained the position to.

A third of the way through the race and it was the two haas drivers running one and two. SLR Leah made the move on SLR Jack for P2 and a couple laps later he got the lead with the pit window now open for the soft runners. Though having just took the lead Leah spun and dropped down the order.

On lap 20 we had a second safety car which allowed the medium runners a free pit stop on to the softs at least it seemed that way has Haze crashed well going into the pits from the lead.

So now Swinners was leading the race and after spinning lap 1 championship leader Charlie was now P2 on the softer tyres. Swinners was doing a great job to keep the guys behind lap 25 saw a vsc as Bcfc Josh retired.

Charlie then got the move done for the lead however was able to break away from Swinners. Meanwhile thatguy and chicknrosery were battling it out nip and tuck. Lap 29 just 7 from the end Swinners and Charlie going head to head constantly swapping positions came to a brisk end as Swinners spun which hampered Charlie but hampered thatguy even more who was now out. Samlamenace had to pit with no front wing from the incident. Chicknrosery now leading the race with fat ted 2nd and SLR Jack 3rd. The two alpines of blaze and active jmc working hard together to close in on 3rd.

Ted and rosery were battling on track in the final stages with SLR Jack waiting in the wings as he hadn’t picked up any time penalties meant he would take the win. Chicknrosery would get his first podium of the season. Active jmc was 3rd. SLR Charlie 4th. DRaSt1k bLaZe in 5th. SLR Leah in P6. Fat Ted P7. Swinners P8. Skullkiller P9. SLR James final point in P10.

SLR Scopezz vs swinners & alpeh lap 20 - outcome - racing incident looking at the clip provided And Scopezz’ throttle/brake map Scopezz definitely could’ve avoided the wing damage at turn one and then eventually gets caught up by the spinning car ahead because scopezz had extended the track and unluckily collided with the car who spun ahead.

Div 4

As we enter the halfway point of the season, Div 4 takes to the Red Bill Ring. What did it have in store?

Qualifying saw the 1st Pole this season for SLR Hicklin followed by SmitHPDanX01 in P2 and Rsf1 Pazuzu in P3.

Onto the race now and SmitHPDanX01 added to his DOTD performance at Paul Ricard with a flawless drive to come home in 1st.

Having had a lengthy battle with Timole, Timole believed pitting for fresh softs was his chance to secure victory, he couldn’t quite manage this task.

SmitHPDanX01 came home in 1st and was denied maximum points by Timole2511 who finished 2nd with fastest lap. Rounding out the podium was Rsf1 Pazuzu.

What will the home of Summit League Racing offer the Division 4 drivers?

Tune in on Saturday @ 9pm to find out

Incident 1: SLR Marsh vs BigBag92 vs Beethoven974 - Lap 1, Causing a collision

Outcome: 5 second time penalty and 2 License Points for Beethoven974

Reason: Beethoven974 brakes too late, crashing into BigBag92, which then means he hits SLR Marsh giving him damage.

Incident 2: SLR Marsh vs BigBag92 - Lap 24, Causing a collision/Forcing another driver off track

Outcome: 5 second time penalty and 2 license points to BigBig92

Reason: BigBag92 drives into the back of SLR Marsh forcing him off track.

Incident 3: xxxxRoscoxxxx vs Popcornjoe5822 - Lap 32, Forcing another driver off track

Outcome: No further action

Reason: Although Popcornjoe5822 brakes too late and cuts off xxxxRoscoxxxx, we feel that this does not warrant further action as both cars were able to continue with no damage, and only a small amount of time lost.

Incident 4: l 21 l Maxwell vs DarkstormQC - Lap 16, Squeezing/Causing a collision

Outcome: 5 second time penalty and 2 License points to DarkstormQC

Reason: DarkstormQC forces l 21 l Maxwell off track by use of contact, causing l 21 l Maxwell to lose places to other cars

Incident 5: SLR Marsh - Formation Lap, Falling too far back

Outcome: No further action

Reason: SLR Marsh had spun, which was the primary cause of the large gap.

Incident 6: Rsf1 Pazuzu - Formation Lap, Falling to far back

Outcome: 5 Second time penalty and 1 license point to Rsf1 Pazuzu

Reason: Rsf1 Pazuzu leaves a significantly large gap to the 2 leading cars on the formation lap for an extended period of time. This is in direct breach of rule 9.2.

Incident 7: Vision2614 - Formation Lap, Falling too far back

Outcome: No further action

Reason: Vision2614 does close the gap left within reasonable time, although it was noted the gap was created on more than 1 occasion.

Stewards Note: All drivers must maintain the gap during the formation lap. Failure to do so can be penalised.

Note: Beethoven974 has now reached the license point threshold for an Official Warning for driving standards
